Most frequently asked question: Why is the tax impact of Question #2 (Expanded Gym/Indoor Track at $4 million) more than Question #1 (Two-School Plan at $18 million)?
The decision by residents at the 2011 Annual Meeting to decline a 4% tax levy reduction - keeping school taxes the same as last year - will provide funds to cover the first $15.3 million of the proposed project costs. To accomplish this, $500,000 can be retained annually in the District debt service tax for the next 20-25 years and be used for major building improvements. Question #1 costs an additional $2.7 million. Question #2 costs an additional $4 million.
Why now?
Now is the best financial opportunity in years to modernize and extend the life of district facilities, with the lowest impact on taxpayers. This is due to historic low interest rates and labor costs. $5 million in federal interest free bonds secured by the District will save $2 million in interest payments. Improvements to our schools/campus will make Brown Deer a more attractive community for young families and prospective home buyers. This plan addresses $11 million in current district maintenance needs.
